Whitaker Point

This weekend, I took a short hiking trip with my brother, his wife and my nephew. We went to see a spetacular sandstone formation known as Whitaker Point (a.k.a Hawksbill Crag). The drive to the trailhead was steep and up a rocky dirt road. The hike was steep and about 2 miles one way. However, the views were definitely worth it.

We saw this cool little balancing rock on the way in. I had to get a picture of it.

Of course, that's not what we came to see. This is what the whole trip was for.

Another cool (yet scary) thing about this trail is that there are no barriers or fences. You can walk right out on the outcrop.

That's my brother and his wife out there defying death.

There is also this funny looking outcrop on the other side of Hawksbill Crag. I thought it was interesting enough to take a picture of it.

Here's my nephew and I holding it up.

Northern Arkansas may be one of the most religious areas in the US, but with vistas like these, who'd want to leave?

If any of you guys get to my neck of the woods, you'll have to check this place out.

I can say with certainty that I've never made the trek up Whitaker Point. However, I have been just below it; maybe people up on the crag were looking down at me. :)

I can remember going to an area between Boxley & Ponca to go tubing on the Buffalo back in '83. It was one of those really hot Arkansas summer days. My then-wife & I with our dog splashed around for hours. The river was really low that year, so there were lots of tranquil pools.

We had a grand time of it!!
