Bible Quoting to an Atheist

My good friend (though I have never met him) Bruce over at Bruce Droppings has posted a great article about the authority of the bible.

News Flash to Defenders of the Christian Faith

He does not take the aproach of debating whether of not the bible is authorative, infallible, or inerrant. Instead he simply states that atheists and agnostics do not (usually) accept the bible as authorative.
So you need to understand that when you stop by Bruce Droppings on the latest leg of your apologetics tour and you quote some Bible verses to us….they don’t count for much. Your Bible quoting may get you Amen’s at Church or in Sunday School class…….but here at Bruce Droppings all you might get is a “so what.”
As a matter of fact, when I get a long comment that is mostly scripture quotes, I gloss over the scripture quotes. Why? Because for one, I've already read the bible. And two, I don't accept the bible as authorative. In my perspective, just because the bible says it, does not mean that it has to be true.

Don't get me wrong. The bible does have some good things to say. However, there's alot of junk in there too. That's the case with all three of the holy books that I have read. As long as there is more junk than good, I can't call the book authorative.

I've read parts of the Qur'an. It's not an easy book to read. Much of it sounds like Vogon poetry. Here's a sample:

Lo! the tree of Zaqqum,
The food of the sinner!
Like molten brass, it seetheth in their bellies
As the seething of boiling water.
(And it will be said): Take him and drag him to the midst of hell,
Then pour upon his head the torment of boiling water.
(Saying): Taste! Lo! thou wast forsooth the mighty, the noble!
Lo! this is that whereof ye used to doubt.
Lo! those who kept their duty will be in a place secured.
Amid gardens and watersprings,
Attired in silk and silk embroidery, facing one another.
Surah 44:43-53

That dude's a spammer. I've gotten that exact same comment from him three times on my posts. I also just saw that exact same comment over at The Atheist Missionary.

Just so you know...

Although, for the record, I love the idea of the Qu'ran as Vogon poetry.

Thanks Geds,

There's another spammer on another comment thread that claims that gravity is God.

I think I may start a new series called Holy Book or Vogon Poetry? I'll pick a choice passage from a holy book and the readers have to guess if it is a holy book or vogon poetry.

In case some of you other guys don't know:

Vogon Poetry

Holy Book or Vogon Poetry? would be absolutely stellar.

I know there's plenty to work with from Column A. Is there actually that much Vogon Poetry out there, though? I only know of the one example...

Geds actually, none of it would be actual Vogon poetry. However as a joke, I'd attribute all of it to Vogons.
